Reflecting on the process for creating this image set I tried to capture what the space was like for people of the past. This garage that sits behind my apartment seems like a decaying structure where generations of people young and old used it for whatever they needed. The graffiti I captured tells stories of younger teens hanging out with friends and leaving a piece of themselves behind. The cobwebs filled with sawdust and debris tell us of their past and how they existed within the garage. The spade on the wall from a previous renter sits suspended there in the dark for a garden that no longer exists. These ideas are what I wanted to represent and i felt that it was somewhat similar to how Night and Fog revists the concentration camps and documents those spaces (albeit obviously with a much different tone). I took the initial shot of the ivy shrouded door to try and create an establishing picture of the building. After this I spent some time just walking around not touching anything and just trying to observe different possible subjects.
